Dining out is great, but oh, how wonderful it is to come home to your own cutting board and knives.
I had a very successful time of it in Chicago. We had a nice dinner at a tapas place one night, and another night I was asked by a waiter (and this is a first) at a fine dining restaurant whether I was a vegan or an ovo-lacto vegetarian. I was floored. Needless to say, I would suggest that the next time any one of you are in Chicago, that you have dinner at Crofton on Wells. My entrée (Smoked Cauliflower & Lentils) was okay, (it was undersalted to my palate & the lentils needed a mirepoix backup in their cooking liquid) but my first course, salad, and dessert (as well as the first courses, salads and desserts of others that I was able to try) were all terrific. There’s a vegetarian menu in addition to the regular menu, and a number of the items on the regular menu could be prepared to be vegetarian. If nothing on the menu agreed with me, our server said, the chef would also be happy to prepare a risotto.
It’s nice to feel more than accommodated when you go out to eat as an herbivore.
